ABOUT MARK

Mark has been working in the outdoors as a Teacher, Instructor, Leader and Coach for over 20 years and became a full time freelance outdoor professional in 2016. Following his time in the Royal Air Force, he was involved with the RAF Air Cadets and previously held the post of Adventure Training Technical Officer to London and South East Region.

​

Since leaving the Royal Air Force, he has worked in a variety of different educational settings, including three years running the Post 16 department at a Special Educational Needs school for pupils displaying Social, Emotional and Behavioural Difficulties. In this post, he introduced the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and was successful in seeing students go on to achieve Mayor’s Education Awards for Outstanding Achievements in Education.

In addition to working as a freelance practitioner and facilitating courses, Mark currently holds the position of Operations and Training Manager at 4th Dimension Ltd, a large multi-activity Outdoor Centre delivering a range of activities to over 300 young people per week. In this post, Mark is responsible for all aspects of Centre Management including recruitment, staff training and development, external training courses, policy and programming and client management.

Through his affiliation with Simply-Training, Mark is a Course Provider and Director for City & Guilds qualifications and the Institute for Leadership and Management (ILM) courses. 

​

Mark is passionate about education, training and developing young people wishing to embark on a career in the outdoor industry. He has a proven track record in this sector where many of those he trained are now industry professionals in their own right, working in various settings, both in the UK and around the World.

QUALIFICATIONS

Mark holds a vast array of Instructing, Coaching and Leadership Awards. 

 

He is qualified in Mountain, Hill, Moorland, Lowland and Expedition Leadership. 

 

He is also a qualified European Ropes Course Association (ERCA) Instructor, plus Rock Climbing, Abseiling and Mountain Biking Instructor in addition to holding Coaching and Leadership Awards in Canoeing, Kayaking and Stand-Up Paddleboarding. Mark is also a British Canoeing Endorsed Guide and a British Association of Snowsports (Snowboard) Instructor.

 

Mark is a Supervisor and Assessor for all levels of the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme for both walking and water based expeditions, a tutor for the National Navigation Award Scheme and a Course Director for the National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme. He also holds a Rescue Emergency Care Level 4 (Expedition) First Aid Certificate and an Enhanced DBS Certificate.

Mark also has a Degree in Management and Training and holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE).

 

In addition, he has Diplomas in Social Work, Child Care with Young People (Special Educational Needs), Sport and Recreation (Outdoor Education Training and Development) and Certificates in Mental Health in Young People and Mental Health Counselling.

Mark has Public and Product Liability and Professional Indemnity Insurance covering all aspects of his work.

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIPS

Mark is a Member of the Institute for Leadership and Management (MInstLM), a Member of the Society for Education and Training (MSET) and a Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society (FRGS).

​

He is also a member of The Association of Heads of Outdoor Education Centres (AHOEC) and The National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT).

​

Mark is a Member of the Mountain Training Association (MTA), the British Mountaineering Council (BMC), British Canoeing and the British Association of Snowsport Instructors (BASI).

​

He is proud to be a member of the Patagonia PRO Community and a PRO User for Patagonia Clothing and Equipment.
